Esther Carter, ReServist:
Mentor, Broward County Public Schools
Esther Carter was born and raised in Miami, Florida. She is the mother of three, two boys and one girl. Esther retired after 30 years of service for a telecommunications company. her passion is working with people, especially children.
When she first retired, she worked as a volunteer with Dade County Public Schools, which taught her how to listen to and observe the thinking of today’s youth. They have issues just like adults do. It’s just a matter of taking the time to listen. Once Esther was introduced to ReServe Miami, she found her passion and immediately jumped at the chance to impact the lives of young people.
Esther worked as a mentor in through the Broward County Public School system, and soon discovered that many students complete twelve years of school, but do not graduate, nor receive a diploma. Esther started to change that by helping young people complete their school work—watching 20 students she helped all receive their diploma.
“This is my fourth year working as a ReServist and I can truly say that I am just in awe. I feel so grateful to have the opportunity to be able to make a difference in children’s lives. Just to see a smile on their faces when they come to see me gives me great joy. I hope that I can plant a seed that lets them know that as they become adults, with education, they can be anything and do anything they want! ReServe has been a true blessing in my life after working 30 years, now, in retirement, I am really doing something that I love and have a great passion for. It can’t get any better than this!”
