How can Silver Stars benefit my agency?
The Silver Stars Program offers Mayoral and Non-Mayoral NYC agencies the opportunity to meet business needs with experienced, talented, and knowledgeable retired City and non-city retirees without going through the process of hiring a full-time employee or consultant.
How can I hire a Silver Star?
Your agency must have an approved budget submitted to NYC Aging and a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
Is Silver Stars only applicable for retirees? Could an agency use this program for staff who are not retirement eligible but would like to work part-time? If so, how would this impact pension contributions?
Silver Stars participation is limited to retired Older Adult retirees receiving benefits from the City’s retirement systems. If they are a City retiree they should contact their NYC retirement system. If they are not a City retiree they should contact a social security representative to understand the impact to their benefits.
Is there a NYC Aging-associated cost to this service if an agency wishes to hire a Silver Stars participant?
There is an administrative cost if your agency wishes to hire a Silver Stars participant.
Is the expectation that we offer the minimum/hiring rate of the title?
Wage is determined based on project duties and responsibilities. Positions should offer fair market wages.
Do retirees need to wait one year after retirement to participate in Silver Stars?
No. The waiting period only applies to former City employees communicating with their former City agency on behalf of a non-government entity within one year of leaving City service.
